Ghana joined global community to mark international food day in Accra over the week.

The world food day on the theme, “Right to Food for a Better Life and a Better Future,” which serves as a reminder of the importance of food security and the global commitment to ending hunger.

The Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA), as well as the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, together with the FAO and the World Food Programme (WFP) and other development partners gathered at the forecourt of the ministry to host the flags of Ghana and the UN to signify the country’s resolve to deal with and raise awareness of global hunger and also promote action against worldwide hunger and malnutrition.

In his address the Deputy minister of Agriculture Mr. Yaw Frimpong Addo said farmers have been educated and sensitised and currently adopting to the use of improved farming methods, including the use of improved seeds, which are drought-resistant and early maturing to contain the ever-changing weather conditions, transforming government commitment to agriculture.

The minister added that the NPP government have introduce many intervention programs to ensure food security such as Ghana CARES, Obaatampa program, focusing on tomato, rice ,and poultry as well as improve handling of fruits and vegetables.

The interventions, he indicated, have contributed to food security, improve livelihoods, promote sustainable agricultural practices and enhance resilient agricultural systems.

The aforementioned policies, the deputy minister said, fall in line with government’s national agricultural development agenda; Planting for Food and Jobs Phase II.

“This year’s World Food Day, reminds us that the right to food, which underlines the critical role diverse and nutritious food played in building resilience in the agrifood system that could withstand global challenges is a fundamental human right”, he added .
