Bekwai Family Blames Daughter for Father’s Death Over Abusive Relationship
The Kankam family of Senfi-Bekwai in the Ashanti Region has accused their daughter, Beatrice Adomah Kankam, of being responsible for the death of her father, Opanin Moses Kwadwo Kankam, after he reportedly fell ill upon hearing distressing news about her life abroad.
According to family sources, Beatrice, who travelled to the Netherlands against her father’s advice, has been enduring a troubled and abusive relationship with her Dutch lover, Mr. John Van Kerkhove.
Reports indicate that Beatrice has been physically assaulted, emotionally abused. Her boyfriend is also said to have isolated her from family and friends, leaving her depressed and fearful for her safety.
Beatrice’s elder sister, Selina Krofaa, eventually informed their father about her sister’s ordeal despite Beatrice’s plea to keep it secret. The revelation allegedly devastated Opanin Kankam, whose health began to deteriorate shortly afterward.
Family members claim the 63-year-old man, who was the head of the Kankam household, died on the 16th December, 2023 as a result of emotional trauma caused by his daughter’s situation.
Per their traditional beliefs, the family insists that Beatrice’s disobedience and the sorrow she brought upon her father make her spiritually responsible for his death. They are demanding that she appease the ancestral gods when she returns to Ghana to avert further misfortune.
However, friends close to Beatrice in the Netherlands have appealed for understanding and compassion, describing her as a victim who is already suffering in silence.
“Beatrice is going through hell abroad. She needs love and support, not condemnation,” one friend said.
