Let’s Promote Ga Language – Language Mistress Urges
The Ga Language Mistress at Teshie LekMA ‘12’ Junior High School (JHS), and a recipient of Akrᴐ award Mrs. Ophelia Asheley Sowah, has urged her colleagues Ga Language teachers to help ensure the language is not killed in the Greater Accra Region.
In an interview with Ghanaiandemocrat.com after receiving her award, Mrs. Asheley Sowah, 45, implored her colleagues across the Ga State to come-out with a strategy in the teaching of the language in their various schools so as to help sustain the advocacy to ensure no other local language dominate the Ga language in its home Region.
Mrs. Sowah made this statement at the sideline of Akrᴐ Awards ceremony in Accra over the week appealing to the Ga chiefs, Municipal and District Assemblies in the Greater Accra Region should institute scholarship schemes for any student in their localities who have taken and excel in the subject language.
Teshie ‘Akrᴐ Excellence Awards’ Night, first of its kind has awarded the hard working Ga language teacher and some selected students and other personalities in the Ledzokuku-Krowor Municipal Assembly (LekMA) in its quest to celebrating heroes and heroines.
According to the Teshie Traditional Council (TTC), the event was organized to identify and recognize the impact and influence of today’s trailblazers – academicians, students, entities, medical doctors, engineers, industrialists and entrepreneurs amongst others within the Ga-Dangme communities as part of the activities to round off the Teshie Homowo.
The two other students from different schools who were awarded for their excellent performance in the Ga language were Dede Ofoe, third year, LekMA ‘7’ Junior High School (JHS) and Tryphena Naa Atswei Okang from Teshie Presby Senior High School (Teshie PRESEC).
Among other distinguished personalities who also received various awards including, Mrs. Dr. Ernestina Naadu Mills, former first lady, Nii Odartey Lamptey of GTV, and Obonu Tv channel manager; a renowned former Dance Hall artist in 1989-90s, Nii Adjetey Sowah received award for his scintillating performance in those days.
Others were Professor Emmanuel Martey, former Moderator of Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Richard ‘Olele’ Kingston, and former Black Stars Goalkeeper, amongst many others. All the award recipients took away a wooden trophy, a certificate and after their citation each.
The Teshie Traditional Council informed the gathering that ‘Akrᴐ Excellence Awards’ event would continuous unabated, because when individuals realize their contributions, sacrifice, and efforts are being valued and by their respective societies, there will be enormous boost to their egos and personal satisfaction leading to a strong resolve to raise the bar of excellence to further height.
The Council appealed to the government for a number of projects, this includes fishery factory, under the government’s anticipated ‘one district, one factory’ projects slated to start this year in the country before 2017 ends.
The Teshie Traditional Council has noted that protracted chieftaincy disputes in the area retard development. The event noted that money invested in the security to keep peace in the Teshie was enough to bring development if there was no chieftaincy disputes in the area.
