Wuogon polls: Gun-toting NPP macho men fire shots at La-Bawaleshie, snatch ballot box
Some macho men in NSC-branded t-shirts who are suspected to be members of a vigilante group attacked some voters at the La-Bawaleshie Presby JHS polling station on Thursday and fired gunshots in the air during voting in the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-elections.
Accra100.5FM’s Fred Alvis Agbenyo, who was at the La-Bawaleshie Presby JHS polling station to cover the event, reported that the macho men, numbering about 200, got furious when some voters started taking pictures of them and videoing them.
According to Fred Agbenyo, the macho men destroyed polling station Basic One and carried the ballot boxes away.
An NDC polling agent, Victus Avevor, who claimed he witnessed the incident, told our reporter that the gun-wielding macho men are members of the Invincible Forces of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Mr Avevor added: “The people who did that are in the national security uniform but they are not security people.”
Also, Dr Alfred Oko Vanderpuye, a former mayor of Accra and current MP for Ablekuma South, who was at the polling station earlier, told Kwabena Prah Jnr (The Don) on Ghana Yensom on Accra 100.5FM that: “I was in the area to monitor what was going on there. Nothing untoward happened while I was there but after I left, I got the report that there was some confusion and gunshots going on there.”
“I cannot confirm that because I wasn’t there when it happened. This is just elections, the guns must come down so that everyone will feel confident to go and vote.”
