Aggrieved residents of Ayanfuri, a mining community in the Upper Denkyira West District of Central region are calling for the immediate dismissal of John Peter Amewu, Minister for Lands and Natural Resources.

The aggrieved residents have accused the minister of failing to effect the payment of compensation to residents affected by the mining operations of Persus Mining Company.

The residents had earlier gone to court over what they call damage to their homes and other property by the activities of the mining company.

Despite court order instructing the Minister to assign personnel of Land Valuation Division of the Lands Commission to value the number of affected houses to effect compensation payment, Hon Peter Amewu according to enraged residents has for close to a year failed to comply with the court directive.

Mr. Amewu they explained disrespected Former President Kufuor who decided to intervene in the impasse by snubbing his advice after being petitioned by the aggrieved residents.

Since the operations of Persus Mining Company in the area, Over 240 homes have been affected by their mining operations.

Spokesperson for the group Yaw Gyamfi in an interview with Kasapa News’ Central regional correspondent Kwaku Baah-Acheamfour said what is annoying is the seeming seriousness Mr. Awewu attached to the recent incident of the A.M.E project disaster and the subsequent fine imposed on another mining company , when they have for long been left to their fate in similar situation.

“We’ve pursued this matter for the past one and half years, but to no avail. Amewu doesn’t deserve to be a minister.

He’s very selective as a leader. We have presented to him, several court orders that ruled in our favour regarding our case but has deliberately failed to act.

We recently sought refuge in former President Kufuor for him to intervene, and he looked into our case and decided to help us. But up till date there hasn’t been any correspondence from the ministry following the official letter forwarded to the ministry on our behalf by the former leader. This is very disrespectful and Amewu must be dealt with,” he added.
