The National Communications Officer (NCO) of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Sammy Gyamfi has called for the dismissal of Brigadier Gen. Opoku at all levels as part of a reform of the electoral process in Ghana.

Sammy Gyamfi made the call in a press conference held at NDC party’s office in Accra on Tuesday on 19th November, 2024.

Mr. Gyemfi revealed that the General Officer Commanding Central Command of the Ghana Armed Forces in the Ashanti Region, Brigadier Gen., Opoku has been tasked by President Akufo-Addo to execute an election-rigging scheme in the Region ahead of the 2024 polls.

The NCO in a press briefing showed images of the Brigadier General citing leadership planned agenda to used State security agencies to tamper with the 2024 general election as a “travesty”, adding that the reform of the electoral system is a key agenda for the country.

He added that the position was recently given to him in 2024, adding that it is not a mere coincidence that instead of being reprimanded for his role in the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election violence, he has rather
been promoted.

“In his current position, Brigadier General Micheal Opoku has been mandated by Akufo-Addo to take off a well-crafted scheme that has been designed by the NPP to rig the upcoming elections, particularly in the Ashanti region through ballot stuffing, swapping of ballot boxes, swapping of pink sheets and other clandestine activities starting with the special voting exercise scheduled for December 2 this year,” he added.

The NDC Communications officer made known of the fact that the Brigadier General is currently recruiting party faithfuls and given them training at the Asatuary military camp.

“Brigadier General Opoku plans to cloth these bandits in military apparel to unleash violence on NDC agents, supporters and innocent civilians on Election Day”.

INEC’s credibility battle
faced criticism from the NDC communications offiicer after the last general elections, particularly over the failure of the most of its system platform during the presidential election, which INEC blamed on a technical glitch.

He argued that “The INEC leadership must not only be absolutely above board but must also be transparently independent and incorruptible.”
