The Private Newspapers and Online News Publishers Association of Ghana (PRINPAG) has lauded the Government of Ghana for announcing plans to establish a National Media Fund aimed at strengthening the capacity and sustainability of the country’s media landscape.

In a statement issued and signed by its president, David Tamakloe on November 24, 2025, PRINPAG described the proposal as “bold and timely,” noting that the media industry is currently battling rising operational costs, dwindling advertising revenue, limited access to training, and long-term sustainability challenges – especially among small and privately owned media organizations.

PRINPAG said these constraints pose a significant threat to media independence and vibrancy, making the establishment of the Fund essential for safeguarding the sector.

The Association specifically acknowledged President John Dramani Mahama for his “thoughtfulness and longstanding commitment to media development,” recalling that he first introduced the idea of a national media support mechanism during his first term in office in 2016. Although the initiative stalled at the time, PRINPAG expressed confidence that the renewed effort under his leadership will now be realized.

While welcoming the proposal, the group urged government to expedite the establishment and personalization of the Fund to ensure timely support for journalists and media institutions nationwide.

To ensure transparency and effective administration, PRINPAG recommended a strong governance structure comprising a dedicated secretariat, a fund administrator and an independent board of competent and experienced individuals to professionally oversee the Fund.

The Association further appealed to media stakeholders, civil society organisations, the private sector, development partners and the public to support the initiative and collaborate to strengthen Ghana’s media ecosystem. A resilient and independent press, it noted, is vital to deepening democracy, accountability and national development.

PRINPAG reaffirmed its readiness to work with government
