Place All Nungua Lands Under Krowor Assembly – Government Told – Ghanaian Democrat
The Chiefs and people of the Nungua Traditional Area have petitioned the government to place all communities’ lands of the Nungua Traditional Area under the Krowor Municipal Assembly.
The irate indigenes led by some elders and sub-Chiefs adorned in red cloths and bans amidst demonstration wielded placards with various inscriptions as a precursor to a press conference to present their petition.
According to them, government in creating political boundaries has ceded considerable sizes of Nungua land to Teshie, La and Tema, depriving Nungua the first settlers in Ga of their land, who unfortunately now scramble for land.
They therefore ask the President who they believe listens and for that matter the government to return all Nungua lands outside its jurisdiction and place it under the Municipality.
Addressing a press conference after the demonstration, Nii Afotey Botwe II, the Chief of Otinor in the Nungua Traditional Area stated that there has been a seemingly orchestrated effort by successive governments and their neighbors like La, Teshie as well as Tema aimed at making the people of Nungua who were the first to settle, capture and own lands in part of the country to lose their heritage.
He reiterated that there have been gradual persistent and determined actions being perpetuated to assist their neighbors to take over and claim for themselves vast lands bequeathed to the people of Nungua by their ancestors.
Nii Afotey Botwe II noted that successive governments in their effort to develop the country by creation of Districts, Municipal and Metropolitan Assemblies has administratively reduced the original land size of Nungua.
He added that the administrative developmental maps have succeeded in making La, Teshie and Tema come under a mistaken belief that the land belongs to the people of Nungua due to the mistakes made by the government of Ghana in naming the Assemblies and the institutions being created.
The Krowor Municipal Chief Executive, Joshua Nii Bortey who was present and has received a petition on behalf of the President believed the President will give prominence to the concerns raised, given that he is a Lawyer.
Nii Bortey said the Ledzokuku Municipal Assembly has taken advantage of the situation to collect revenue in some areas under the Krowor Municipal Assembly; a situation he noted deprives the assembly of the bedded revenue to develop the newly carved assembly.
