NPP chairman condemned for threatening Akufo-Addo
The Constituency Executive Committee and Polling Station Executive Committee of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Asuogyaman of the Eastern Region have strongly condemned their Constituency Chairman for threatening President Akufo-Addo over the dismissal of GPHA, Director-General.
Mr. Akyea Darkwa, the Constituency Chairman of the party believes that the manner in which President Akufo-Addo sacked the Director-General of the Ghana Ports and Harbour Authority (GPHA), Mr. Paul Asare Ansah from his post without any tangible reason was not the best and as a result of it, the Constituency Chairman issued a press statement to demonstrate against President Akufo-Addo.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Wednesday terminated the appointment of Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) Director-General, Paul Asare Ansah.
He is to be replaced by Mr. Michael Achagwe Luguje, who is currently the Secretary-General, Port Management Association for West and Central Africa, based in Nigeria.
Reasons for Mr. Paul Ansah’s removal from office are not immediately known but it is believed to have been triggered by a recent spat between workers’ union of the Ports Authority and Board Chair, Peter Mac Manu whom they accuse of engaging in wrongful undertakings as well as running a family and friends’ administration.
The Board Chairman denied all the allegations and caused his lawyers to write to the leaders of the union demanding a retraction and apology and threatening legal action if they fail to.
Mr. Ansah was reported to have been present at the press conference by the workers’ union where the allegations against Mr. Mac Manu were detailed, pitching him firmly against the Board Chairman who is a former Chairman of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP).
But in a statement issued by the party’s Constituency Executive Committee and copied to GhanaWeb, found the Constituency Chairman’s threatening as reckless and therefore condemned it without fear or panic.
“The Party’s Constituency and Polling Station Executives are not in support of the Chairman proposed demonstration and mass resignation”, the statement emphasized.
They, therefore believed that President Akufo-Addo has the power to appoint and disappoint and if the President has exercised his constitutional right, they don’t know the reason why the Constituency Chairman inciting some youth of the party to demonstrate against the President’s decision.
The statement is also calling on Mr. Paul Ansah to, as a matter of urgency call the Constituency Chairman to order because the party is supreme than any individual.
The statement is also urging the media and general public to disregard the ‘selfish’ and ‘parochial interest’ of the Constituency Chairman and therefore appealing to the Regional and National Executives to take disciplinary actions against the Constituency Chairman and Mr. Paul Ansah for inciting some of the youth against President Akufo-Addo in the Asuogyaman Constituency as well as publicly undermining the appointing authority.
“We totally dissociate ourselves from the reckless statement of the Constituency Chairman”, the statement added.
