MUITSA COMMENDS GOVERNMENT ON ITS DIGITIZATION DRIVE
The President and Co-founder of the Methodist University Information Technology Students Association (MUITSA), Miss Bernice Tawiah has commended the government on its ambitious digitization agenda currently ongoing in some key public institutions to ensure efficient and effective service delivery.
The move, she said is a step in the right direction consistent with the present global digital age within which all acts of human endeavor are moving at a convenient quicker pace to propel development and Ghana cannot be left out.
In an interview with this Portal, following the inaugural ceremony of MUITSA under the theme, “National Development Through Information Technology: The Role of IT students”, Miss Tawiah urged government to stay on course and turn around the operations and fortunes of those essential institutions that needed to benefit from the computerization drive for the public good.
It is noteworthy that government has transformed the mode of operations of some public institutions like the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority, National Identification Authority, Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority amongst other notable institutions that are in line to undergo the same exercise and has also launched Ghana’s official digital property addressing system, Ghana Post GPS.
Miss Tawiah said though government’s priority and focus on information technology (IT) in the scheme of things would pay greater dividends, equal emphasis must be placed on information and technology education and training at the various levels of education to facilitate the development process with the provision of the attendant IT logistics and materials.
According to her, the vision of MUITSA is to contribute meaningfully to the information technology concerns in the country with a mission to providing a platform to contribute their quota to help tackle emerging challenges in the area.
Miss Tawiah advised members to assist in ensuring that the association becomes a trans-generational organization that will serve the good of society and develop talents who will effectively participate in the national development agenda.
The Head of Information Technology Department of the University, Mr. Samuel Attuquayefio said the current government has some measure of focus on Information Communication and Technology (ICT) and advised students to scan their environment for such information and contribute or learn in the process.
He further said the government is on a transformational agenda to transform the economy through ICT, and it therefore behooves on students in the field to seize any opportunity that comes their way to make themselves useful.
On his part, the patron of MUITSA and Lecturer at the IT Department, Mr.Akwasi Achampong, said in addition to acquiring the necessary skills, students should also cultivate the habit of identifying problems that can be solved with IT, adding that they should be able to define problems and come out with effective IT solutions.
He commended the students of the IT department of the MUCG who are almost through with a Tourist Guide App which can guide individuals to travel to different parts of the world for tourism using their phones to make the necessary advanced arrangements and bookings.
