Med El Academy Hosts Family Curriculum Training Workshop for Cochlear Implant Parents

Med El Academy, in collaboration with the Speech, Hearing and Therapy Centre, successfully conducted a Family Curriculum Training Workshop at Talkative Mom Studios on March 6-7, 2025. The workshop primarily aimed to educate parents of children fitted with Med El cochlear implants (CIs).
Local Speech and Language Therapists, who have undergone extensive training over the past few years, led the sessions. They provided vital information on how hearing works and offered practical coaching to help parents support their children in maximizing the benefits of their cochlear implants.
Nana Akua Owusu, a specialist in speech and language rehabilitation at Med El Academy, emphasized the significance of the two-day initiative. “This training workshop is crucial for ensuring that children do not fall behind in medical screening due to the application of modern technology,” she stated.
As part of the preparatory work for the project’s roll-out, ongoing training sessions are being conducted for staff at the Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) department, with support from Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.
Nana Akua urged participants to disseminate the knowledge and resources acquired during the workshop. “Collaboration is key; our ultimate goal is to ensure that patients receive the support they need,” she remarked. She advocated for comprehensive basic screening services for every child born in Ghana, not only in audiology but also for conditions like cleft palate.
Owusu also advised parents to seek help immediately if they suspect their children have hearing issues, highlighting that early intervention can lead to effective solutions. “When we work together, we can advocate for proper resource allocation that truly impacts lives,” she concluded.
Med El Academy, a renowned Austrian company, specializes in the manufacture and management of cochlear implants. Collaborating with ENT surgeons at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital and rehabilitation therapists at Cape Coast Teaching Hospital, they aim to provide comprehensive CI care for both children and adults.
