The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition has announced a significant policy shift, requiring all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to budget for and pay their electricity bills.

According to the Energy minister John Jinapor, critical institutions have been identified, with specific exemptions applied to ensure essential services remain unaffected.

“We have classified these institutions, and parliament is approving, so we can publish them,” Jinapor explained during a meeting with power sector agencies.

“All MDAs are supposed to pay for their electricity bills. They have to budget for it.” The minister highlighted that certain areas within the health and education sectors would be exempt from payment, including laboratories, theaters, and wards in hospitals, as well as lecture halls in educational institutions.

However, other areas such as dormitories and restaurants in educational institutions would not be exempt.

The ministry has further revealed that it is urgently seeking 1.1 billion Ghana Cedis to procure liquid fuel for power generation, as current fuel stocks are estimated to last only 2.6 days. This move underscores the ministry’s efforts to ensure sustainable energy management and fiscal responsibility across all government agencies.
