July 29, 2025 – President John Dramani Mahama has announced that the Ministry of Finance has granted approval for the acquisition of over 600 pieces of agricultural machinery under the government’s “Big Push” infrastructure initiative, aimed at modernising Ghana’s agribusiness sector and supporting mechanised farming.
Speaking at the launch of the National Agribusiness Dialogue at the Kempinski Gold Coast Hotel in Accra on Monday, President Mahama disclosed that the approved equipment will be used to establish 11 out of 50 planned Farmers’ Service Centers across major farming zones in the country.
“These tractors and equipment will not be sold to farmers as we did in the past,” he stated. “They will be stationed at strategic farmers’ service centers to provide mechanisation support. Farmers would register with their local center and request services when needed.”
President Mahama emphasised that the initiative focuses on access rather than ownership, arguing that what farmers truly need is not to possess machinery but to benefit from efficient and reliable services.
“What farmers need is not to own tractors and combine harvesters,” he noted. “What they need is the service of tractors and combine harvesters. Let specialised private sector agencies who know how to maintain these machines manage them and provide the service.”
The mechanization drive is a key part of the broader government agenda to modernize agriculture and advance the proposed 24-hour economy strategy, which seeks to promote year-round production through irrigation, agro-industrial support and export-driven growth.
President Mahama reiterated his administration’s commitment to transforming agriculture into a commercially viable and youth-driven sector, while enhancing food security and economic growth nationwide.
