The Government of Ghana has withdrawn the controversial Lithium Agreement from Parliament to allow for further review and improvement, following extensive consultations with stakeholders nationwide.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, December 10, 2025, the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources announced that Sector Minister, Hon. Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah (MP), officially pulled the agreement currently before Parliament to ensure fairer and stronger review as well as “deeper consideration” of concerns raised by citizens, experts and interest groups.

According to the Ministry, the move demonstrates government’s commitment to responsive and participatory governance, ensuring that all natural resource policies reflect the national interest and the views of the Ghanaian people.

The statement noted that feedback from stakeholders showed the need for a more robust and transparent framework to govern Ghana’s emerging lithium sector. As a result, the Ministry has begun a formal process to refine the legal instrument to ensure “the highest standards of fairness and national interest.”

A revised agreement – fully compliant with Ghanaian laws and enriched with stakeholder inputs – will be resubmitted to Parliament in due course.

The Ministry emphasized that its long-term goal remains unchanged: to secure maximum benefits for Ghanaians, promote fairness and transparency and uphold the trust placed in government.

It also expressed gratitude to all individuals and institutions whose contributions continue to guide the process, reaffirming its commitment to collaborative and inclusive natural resource governance.
