Ghana Launches National Gun Amnesty As Interior Minister Leads Crackdown
By: Nana Kwasi Roka
The Minister for the Interior, Hon. Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has announced a nationwide Gun Amnesty programme to curb the rising spread of illicit firearms.
The amnesty, which runs from 1st December 2025 to 15th January 2026, allows anyone holding unregistered or illegal weapons to voluntarily surrender them without fear of arrest or prosecution.
Hon. Muntaka expressed concern over the increasing violent crime rate, noting that 2024 recorded 1,219 robberies and 552 murders, while by July 2025, the country had already registered 628 robberies and 340 murders.
Key measures accompanying the amnesty include a temporary suspension of firearm import permits, a ban on celebratory gunfire during festivals, intensified border checks and post-amnesty security operations to retrieve illicit guns.
The Minister urged traditional leaders, religious groups, youth associations and the media to support the initiative.
“Guns Down, Ghana Up!” he declared.
