Dr Ato Forson Threatens to Recall Parliament Over Voter Register Irregularities
Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, Minority Leader in Parliament, has sounded the alarm on the integrity of Ghana’s voter register, citing irregularities that could compromise the credibility of the 2024 general elections.
Dr. Forson has urged the Electoral Commission (EC) to conduct a thorough audit of the voter register to address the issues and ensure a free, fair, and transparent process.
“We believe that the voter’s register must be audited. The level of tampering we’ve observed so far makes it impossible to proceed without a proper review. This audit will help us understand the extent of the issue and fix the system,” Dr. Forson stated during a nationwide demonstration organized by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Accra.
In his constituency, Dr. Forson revealed shocking discrepancies, including approximately 3,000 names added to the transfer register and multiple registrations, inflating the register by around 5,000 names.
“This raises serious concerns, and we need Parliament to intervene,” Dr. Forson emphasized.
The NDC leadership is determined to push for reforms within the EC to address these discrepancies before the elections.
Dr. Forson cautioned that failure to audit the register would raise significant doubts about the legitimacy of the upcoming elections, potentially eroding public trust in the EC’s capacity to oversee a transparent electoral process.
The NDC warns that if these issues are not addressed, the credibility of the 2024 elections could be in jeopardy.
The Minority Leader has threatened to recall Parliament to compel the EC to conduct the audit.
