Dr. Apaak Storms Volta Region Schools on Surprise Visit to Monitor Freshers’ Admission

Deputy Minister of Education, Dr. Clement Abas Apaak, has undertaken a surprise inspection of selected Senior High Schools (SHSs) in the Volta Region to assess the progress of the ongoing admission and registration exercise for first-year students.
The unannounced visit, carried out on the instructions of the Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, forms part of a nationwide monitoring effort to ensure that the admission process is orderly, transparent and stress-free for students and parents alike.
Concerns at OLA Girls’ SHS
Dr. Apaak’s first stop was OLA Girls’ Senior High School in Ho, where he was met with long queues and slow-moving registration lines. The visibly concerned Deputy Minister said he wanted to see things firsthand and understand the bottlenecks hampering a smooth exercise.
“I came here unannounced to observe how things are unfolding and what I’m witnessing gives me cause for concern,” he remarked.
Following discussions with the school’s headmistress, Dr. Apaak directed that immediate steps be taken to streamline the process. He instructed the school to add more computers and increase the number of staff handling registration to speed up operations.
“We are going to review the process to make it faster and more efficient. I have advised the school to deploy additional logistics and personnel to ease the pressure,” he emphasized.
Calls for Smarter Registration
The Deputy Minister also proposed a staggered registration system, suggesting that students complete some preliminary steps off-site before returning to finalize their admission. This, he said, would help reduce congestion and save parents long waiting hours.
He assured parents and students that the Ministry was fully aware of logistical challenges confronting some schools and that interventions were underway to resolve them promptly.
Stop at Taviefe SHS
At Taviefe Senior High School, Dr. Apaak interacted with parents, guardians and new entrants, encouraging them to remain patient as the government worked to improve conditions in schools nationwide.
His monitoring exercise, according to the Ministry, will continue in other parts of the country to ensure a seamless and transparent admissions process across all second-cycle institutions.
Education Minister on the Ground
Dr. Apaak’s visit mirrors that of his boss, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, who earlier toured Presbyterian Boys’ Senior High School (PRESEC), Legon. The Education Minister commended the school’s management and pledged to support infrastructure expansion to enhance teaching and learning.
