The solemn air at the Ghana Consulate in New York was pierced by the quiet rustle of pages as Alhaji Abdul Salam Zeeba, USA Zongo Caucus Coordinator, penned his heartfelt tribute in the official book of condolences. The occasion marked yet another poignant moment in the nation’s ongoing mourning for the eight gallant souls who perished in the recent military helicopter crash.

With measured words filled with sorrow, compassion and solidarity, Alhaji Zeeba expressed deep sympathy to the bereaved families, the entire Ghanaian nation and in particular, the President of the Republic, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, Vice President, Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) fraternity.
“This is not only a loss to the families and our country, but to humanity,” his note read in part, capturing the shared grief that has enveloped Ghanaians both at home and abroad. He emphasised that the loss of high-ranking officials and dedicated patriots was a blow not only to the government but to the nation’s collective spirit.

The Consulate, draped in sombre decor, has become a gathering point for the Ghanaian diaspora in the United States, as individuals and community leaders stream in to pay their respects. Attendees described the atmosphere as “heavy with heartbreak but also alive with unity,” as the tragedy has brought together people from diverse backgrounds to stand as one.
The ill-fated crash, which claimed the lives of key national figures including Defence Minister Dr. Omane Boamah and Environment Minister Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed (MP), has been described as one of the most devastating incidents in Ghana’s recent history. Vigils, prayer services and condolence books have sprung up not only across Ghana but also in Ghanaian communities around the world.

Speaking briefly after signing the book, Alhaji Zeeba noted that while the nation’s wounds will take time to heal, “our resilience as a people will see us through.” His message, many say, was a powerful reminder that no matter the distance, the Ghanaian spirit of solidarity remains unbroken in the face of loss.
As the mourning period continues, the outpouring of tributes from every corner of the globe stands as a testament to the enduring bond that binds Ghanaians together – in joy, in challenge and in grief.
