Following the tragic incident that claimed six lives at the El-Wak Army Recruitment Center, the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Hon. Linda Ocloo, has called for urgent reforms in safety and crowd management protocols during public recruitment exercises.
In a statement issued on Thursday, Hon. Ocloo expressed her deepest condolences to the bereaved families and described the event as a “heartbreaking tragedy” that should never have happened.
“As a woman and as the Greater Accra Regional Minister, I am deeply saddened by this heartbreaking incident. Witnessing the scene firsthand was profoundly distressing,” she said.
The Minister emphasized that the unfortunate event highlights the urgent need for authorities to enforce proper coordination, space management and medical readiness during mass recruitment and public gatherings.
“This tragedy serves as a solemn reminder of the need for stronger safety protocols and better crowd management measures in all public exercises of this nature,” she stressed.
Hon. Ocloo disclosed that her office is already in close consultation with the Ghana Armed Forces, NADMO and other relevant agencies to investigate the cause of the stampede and develop preventive strategies.
She also appealed to the public to remain calm and allow the ongoing investigations to establish the facts surrounding the incident.
“May the souls of our departed sisters rest in perfect peace,” she concluded.
