Most of the President’s appointees’ unguided public statements are becoming worrying and the president seems to be unconcerned about it.

The latest to join the fray of such unguided public statements and show of gross disrespect for the certain group of people is the Minister for Works and Housing, Hon. Samuel Atta Akyea.

The Minister out of his regular show of ego decided to insult the people of Nima, a suburb in the greater Accra region describing them as people who have never seen a water closet toilet and for the first time they will be having  flushing toilet.

One could remember that on Wednesday 27 of Febuary, 2019, the Minister for works and housing hon. Samuel Atta Akyea made a comment on the floor of parliament that residents in Nima for the first time in their lives would have access to flushing toilet facilities, as part of government’s agenda to give a facelift to the slum.

‘’ Mr. Speaker, there’s a slum upgrading which is about happening, that’s the Nima area. We wouldn’t want to pay lip service to the fact that we have some Ghanaians who are living in slum’’.

‘’We are going to begin with, Nima and give Nima a facelift and for the first time we will see the good people of Nima having flushing toilets like anybody will do in East Legon’’, said the Minister.

One of the Parliamentary Aspirants of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Kwadjo Otchere Darko has taken a swipe at the Minister describing his statement as pure incompetence of his current position as Minister for Works and Housing.

According to Mr. Okyere, the works and housing Minister has demonstrated to the President and the people of Ghana that he was not ready for the job since his appointment.

He cited an example where the Minister could not even work with the committee of Parliament which is supposed to be working with his Ministry.

For him, the Minister should have been sacked by the president long ago due to his level of incompetence and disrespect to the people he is serving.

He pointed out to the Minister that housing at Nima are comparable to any house across the country.

He said the Minister who doubles as the Member of Parliament for Akim Abuakwa South in the Eastern Region should have piloted that project in his constituency since majority of residents there do open defecation in the bush.

He said the Minister himself was a product of open defecation and should work hard to give his people modern public latrines instead.
