Kwahu West Municipal Assembly Commissions Twin Projects To Boost Living Standards Of Its People

The Kwahu West Municipal Assembly in the Eastern Region has commissioned an ultra-modern library and computer laboratory for school children and members of the Nkawkaw community respectively to boost teaching and learning as well as research development in the municipality.

The Assembly again commissioned a newly built durbar ground to help augment activities of the chiefs and people of Nkawkaw Adoagyiri.

In a speech to inaugurate the community library and computer laboratory, Hajia Barikisu Adams, the Municipal Education Director said, the facility gives an opportunity for the children and members of the community to improve upon their literacy levels. Hajia Barikisu also disclosed that the facility has been equipped with enough computers and books for people of all levels of education in the municipality from pre-school to the senior high school levels.

The director of education further challenged teachers that the facility is strategically positioned in a cluster of schools and therefore, they must make enough time for the school children to visit and learn how to borrow and return books that are picked from the facility. She again encouraged teachers to revive all reading and debating clubs to make the school children develop great interest in patronizing the facility.

Miss Ama Botwey who represented the regional librarian in her speech also indicated that, the need for libraries has not received the required attention in our various communities but commended the Kwahu West Municipal Assembly for providing the facility. She also added that libraries are very important cornerstones in building healthy communities because they give people the opportunities to research and also explore job opportunities as well as help improve vocabularies of students.

Miss Ama Botwey again reiterated that with the new library facility, children and members of the community have the opportunity to free access to books, computers and other resources to enhance their research and knowledge accessibility in the community.

Miss Ama Botwey indicated that the library industry has a lot of challenges such as rising cost of books and other materials, lack of staff, budget shortages and growing demand from customers for much information.

The Municipal Chief Executive for the Kwahu West Municipal Assembly, Hon. Yaw Owusu Addo, thanked H.E.Nana Addo Danquah Akuffo Addo for providing the opportunity for the continuation of the project. He also commended Hon. Obeng Somuah the former MCE who started the building of the facility for working hard to bring the idea of building the facility for the municipality.

Hon. Owusu Addo further added that better education is a priority of the current government hence the introduction of the  free SHS policy and therefore suggested to the educational directorate to design an opportunity for other schools in the  municipality who do not have computer laboratories to attend ICT lessons in the facility to erase the lack of ICT facilities from amongst the schools in the municipality.

The MCE again encouraged the teachers and students as well as community members to use the facility as often as possible because he wanted to produce ICT literate students in his municipality but cautioned all to make sure the culture of maintenance an issue of importance.

He further thanked the chiefs and people of the Bomeng traditional area for their continuous support for the assembly and government at large.

Nana Effah Opinaman, the chief of Bomeng Kwahu also pleaded with the administrators of the facility to open the facility from Monday to Sunday to augment research and learning for all residents of the community. He has also pleaded with parents to help encourage their wards to visit the facility as often as possible and rather discourage the children from watching the numerous telenovelas which has the potential of spoiling them especially the adult channels.

Nana Effah Opinaman advised that CCT gadgets be planted in the library facility to prevent some bad students from stealing parts of the computers and other learning materials.

Finally, Nana Effah Opinaman reiterated government’s commitment to better education in Ghana by the introduction of the free SHS policy and therefore advice parents to do well to encourage their wards and help them to go far in their educational journey. He again called on the students to help themselves by studying hard to achieve their aim in education and finally called on teachers to help their students from their heart because they are the future.
